An Open Invitation to all amateur Musicians,
Thank you for your interest in the Whalley Legion Band, the official band of the City of Surrey, B.C. Canada.
We are primarily a concert band that plays a wide variety of music from classical pieces and contemporary band compositions to show tunes and swing. We also feature a 30's and 40's style Big Band, and we play all the classic Swing favorites, with a liberal dash of modern Stage and Jazz band tunes. You will find we have something challenging and rewarding for musicians from the early intermediate levels and up.
The Whalley Legion Band plays many shows every year, both locally and abroad. We tour locally every year, and we try to make a big trip every 2 or 3 years. In 2000, we represented Canada at the Alnwick International Music Festival in Alnwick, England, to rave reviews. We left with a standing invitation to return.
The band is directed by two very talented conductors. Our concert band conductor is a professional high school band instructor and he also plays a mean trumpet in our Big Band. Our Big Band `guru' has been a professional musician all his life, and he played with some of the greats in the Big Band Era - nobody knows more about the `Big Band Sound'. Between the two of these conductors, our music direction is second to none.
We are always recruiting new members. Our concert band practices on Mondays at 7:00 pm at the Whalley Legion Annex 13525, 106th Ave., Surrey. All musicians are welcome, of all ages, though musicians just starting out will find our program a challenge. Come and 'sit-in' on a practice, we would be glad to meet you. This is my personal invitation to you, I hope to see you there!
Please note - all musicians wishing to travel abroad must be members of the band for at least one year prior to any major trip - so join now to be eligible to travel.
